History[]

Jim witnessed his older brother, Dan, die when they were young. After having seen Dan die and being unable to save him but still trying to make him feel safe, Jim decided from that experience to become a paramedic.

While working as a firefighter, Jim met Melinda Gordon when he rescued her from a burning apartment complex. Sometime before their marriage, he learned of Melinda's unique ability to communicate with ghosts.

After Melinda has a near death experience, Jim becomes worried about what else could happen to Melinda because of the ghosts. Jim also helps try to find information about Melinda's father, Tom Gordon, who might, or might not be dead, as well as her brother.

Later, Jim welcomed his friend Matt, a returning soldier from Iraq, back to Grandview. When Matt becomes paranoid due to being haunted by his dead comrades, and post-traumatic stress disorder, Jim confronts Matt in the town square and talks Matt out of trying to kill himself. Jim delivered some of his convincing argument with Matt's gun pointed at him.

Soon after, Gabriel returns to Grandview, and Jim warns him away, though not before Gabriel reveals that he is Melinda's half-brother. Jim, Rick, and Delia go in search of Melinda, who is trapped in old Grandview, which is buried under present day Grandview. Tessa, the ghost of Melinda's maternal ancestor who was also a Ghost Whisperer, helps them find Melinda by communicating with Delia and Jim.

Jim also begins thinking of moving out of Grandview while attending Medical School; at first, Melinda does not like the idea, but she later agrees to it.

Jim admits that he would like to have children someday. Jim and Melinda have recently tried for a baby with no success. Jim and Melinda would love to have at least one child.

Jim and Melinda were invited to Jim's childhood friend's wedding[1], Tricia, but it turned out that the groom had not been honest about himself and the wedding was called off. Jim later returns to the cottage where the wedding was supposed to take place and walks in on Hunter, the former groom, drunk and sitting with a loaded rifle. Realizing that Jim could be in danger, Melinda calls detective Carl Neely and races back to the cottage where the two men are inside fighting over the rifle. Detective Neely doesn't go inside, he instead chooses to pulls his weapon and aim towards the dark house, shooting through the curtained window at who he thought was the assailant, but it was Jim instead. Jim is rushed to the hospital and spends hours in surgery but it is successful and Melinda can finally go to his bedside to wait for him to wake up. It's implied she waits several hours and is shown to eventually fall asleep next to her husband. She wakes up to find Jim right in front of her, and believing him to be awake she tells him she loves him. Jim tries to explain was an embolism is but Melinda remains confused, not understanding why he's telling her this, but he tells her to not get up from her chair and that he wants her to remember him like he is now and not as he is in the hospital bed. Melinda finally realizes that she is speaking to Jim's ghost and starts to cry as doctors and nurses rush in to tend to Jim who is flatlining.

Jim is finally reunited with Dan who tells him that he has been waiting for Jim before he could cross over, he had promised their late father that the two of them would go into the light together. Dan tries to convince Jim to come with him into the light, his time on earth had become limited due to waiting decades already, however Jim doesn't want to leave Melinda no matter what Dan says. In the end, Jim watches as Dan crosses over, their dad greeting him on the other side. After Dan is gone for good, Jim continues to try and contact Melinda who hasn't been able to see his ghost or any other in the two days since Jim's death. No matter how hard he tries, Jim can't get through to her because she is grieving too deeply, making it so that the veil between the living and the dead is blocking her supernatual senses. All she needs is to find a true moment of joy and the veil should lift. That moment happens at Jim's funeral when everyone starts to dance and laugh together celebrating Jim's life, she finally sees him standing accross the room from her and the two share a dance together.

Melinda keeps trying to convince Jim to cross over but he refuses and starts wishing he was alive again so he could be with her. With some experimentation, Jim realizes that he can possess the body of a recently deceased person who's sould has successfully crossed over. He tells Melinda but she doesn't think it's right, he doesn't listen and when he arrives at a car crash site, Jim notices a body that would be perfect for a step-in because the ghost of that person crossed over right away. Melinda shouts to make him stop but Jim jumps into the body of Sam Lucas. Unfortunately, Jim later wakes up with amnesia, he can't remember his life as Jim or his life as Sam, breaking Melinda's heart. Over the next few weeks, Jim tries to find out about his life as Sam while also trying to understand how he could have such strong feelings for a woman he doesn't remember. Wanting to keep him close, Melinda asks him to move into her garage under the guise of renovating it. Eventually, Jim finds out about a woman Sam had been dating off and on for almost ten years, by finding the engagement ring he wanted to give her before he died. After a few tries and even visiting Nicole's old address, Jim finally gets in contact with her. Due to her past with Sam and his lack of commitment, she was very hesitant to believe his amnesia was real, but eventually comes around and the two try to work things out[2]. The problem is that Sam Lucas is gone forever and Jim can't remember anything whatsoever but he does feel a strong pull towards Melinda and is unsure how he to proceed with Nicole. He said Nicole feels comfortable, but Melinda asks him to hold out for better and he decides to let Nicole go in the end.

Once Nicole is gone, Jim still living as Sam asks Melinda if she wants to go out with him[3]. The two start dating and it goes well except for the many ghost interruptions which he has no clue about. Melinda wants to tell him the truth about seeing ghosts and about how Sam is actually Jim, but she gets the feeling that this version of Jim with amnesia would not believe her. Needing to feel grounded due to the memory loss, Jim clings to beliefs that feel true and immovable such as "ghosts aren't real", but even this belief gets challenged when Melinda finally tells him the truth[4]. Jim doesn't believe her, saying she needs serious help. This breaks her completely and she decides she's tried hard enough but the Jim Clancy she knew is gone now even if his soul is in Sam's body, she tells him she's done and that he needs to move out of her garage. Jim respects her wishes but still tries to talk to her and work things out, but Melinda can't be with him because he doesn't have faith in her and she can't live without that.

Jim finally regains his memory when he nearly drowns while trying to save Melinda who was trapped, the near death experience loosened his memories at last but he forgot everything between getting shot and almost drowning. It's clear that the old Jim Clancy is back though, even though he was quite shocked to see his new face and body. Trying to adjust to his new identity as Sam Lucas, Jim realizes that he finally has a chance at becoming a doctor because Sam had studied the required classes Jim was missing for medical school, while he was studying to become an architect[5].

Jim learns he and Melinda are going to be parents.

Melinda and Jim have discussed having a child together. Melinda says that she isn't ready in the first season because she doesn't want to be like her mother was with her. Early in the fourth season, Melinda becomes pregnant but suffers a miscarriage. Towards the end of the fourth season, Melinda discovers that she is pregnant again, eight weeks. This means that she became pregnant before Jim's "death". Jim is thrilled to be a father.
